International Women’s Day

Today, the 8 March 2009 (Sunday), is International Women’s Day. Women In Golf is joining women around the globe to celebrate their achievements.
I did not know that IWD is now an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. This is the day where men honour their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries, children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.
In the turn of the millennium, there has been a significant change in the attitudes toward women and society’s thoughts about women’s equality. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women’s visibility as impressive models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. Have we? Is women’s golf equal to men’s golf? We all know the answer to that! The price monies of the tournaments are less than 30% of the men’s tournaments. Why is that?
We know that women still are not present in equal numbers in business, education, health, etc! However, great improvements have been made! We have female astronauts, prime ministers; girls go to university, same prize monies for men and women tennis tournaments! Congratulations to all of the above! It is the women in golf’s time to obtain equality! Make some noise ladies!
